Altamaha Pine Plantations

Conversions of NWI Wetlands to Pine Plantation - Altamaha River Watershed, Georgia.
~ Southern Environmental Law Center ~

The overall goal of this project for the Southern Environmental Law Center was to develop and test a practical method for determining the extent and rate of conversion of wetlands to pine plantations in the southeast Atlantic coastal plain. Various GIS data sources and analysis approaches were evaluated, and a promising method was identified, developed and applied to obtain conversion results for the Altamaha river watershed in Georgia.

...kind words from Laura Jones, SELC

Study Area

This map shows the Altamaha River watershed study area. The red rectangle outlines the verification area. Pine plantations in this area were classified manually using current 5m panchromatic imagery from the Indian IRS satellite. Pine plantations in various stages of cultivation can be identified visually in the IRS images.

Manual Classification Results

Manual classification was done using the 5m IRS data coupled with examination of TM and land use classification data spanning 1984 to 2001. This map shows the classification results. The white dotted areas are pine planations. The yellow dotted areas are open fields that are being cultivated as pine plantations. The green dotted areas are naturae forest. Deciduous forest is unshaded.
